Hunters Pie

Another first for me tonight, venison. I've eaten venison in restaurants, but I've never cooked with it. I found the original recipe on Game to Eat but adapted it slightly as I only had 450g of venison and I find sweet potato complements venison really well. I served it with turnip.

Hubby really enjoyed it, but I wasn't too sure; it was almost too "meaty" for me. I prefer a venison steak. Hubby is pleased as he has leftovers for lunch tomorrow.

Hunters Pie
Serves 2-3

1 large onion
30g butter
450g venison mince
2 cloves of garlic, crushed
1 tbsp plain flour
200ml beef stock
1 dsp tomato puree
2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 dsp thyme
salt & pepper
400g sweet potato mash
200g potato mash
40g mature Cheddar

1) Fry onions in butter, until soft and golden. Add venison and garlic, fry until venison and lightly browned. Stir in flour, add stock then remaining seasoning and simmer for 15 min.

2) Layer ovenproof dish with mince. Roughly mix sweet potato mash and potato mash together then spoon over mince. Sprinkle with cheese. Grill until cheese is bubbling and brown.

  1. Hi Jules, I've never eaten venison at all. I have heard it is a very lean meat and very tasty. Your hunters pie really looks delicious and comforting for these winter times!

  2. I bet this was delicious! I know what you mean about venison sometimes being too 'meaty' though - I don't think I've cooked with venison mince before, usually steaks or haunch. I must look out for it. I like the idea of combining it with sweet potato mash. Yum!

  3. Rosie - Venison is a great deal leaner than beef and to me tastes like very strong flavoured beef.

Antonia - I think my closet Veggie side came out while I was eating the pie! The butcher I get my meat from is licenced to sell game, I think I'll try cooking venison steak next time.

  4. 'too meaty for me. I prefer a venison STEAK'??

not sure I get your definition of meaty, then...! ;)

looks good, BTW. Oh, and I'm cooking your potato and leek gratin this evening...

  5. aforkfulofspaghetti - lol, I'm a funny thing when it comes to meat. With a steak you have the meat, then often a sauce and accompinents. With something like hunters pie it all the flavours together with the predominant flavour of meat.

I get bored very easily when eating and prefer to lots of individual flavours rather than everything together. I warned you I was odd ;)
